The Wessex Section of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club was first formed on the 9th December 1969 at it's first meeting at the Devonshire Arms Pub, Long Sutton near Lamgport. The original committee consited of: Mr Rowland Coles, Mr J. Hamilton Fleming, Mr M.Lane and Mrs Joyce Sutherland. The section was originally named 'Salisbury and Area', but this was very quickly changed to 'Wessex'.
The current catchment area is roughly from Lynn Regis up to Taunton, then up the M5 to Burnham across and up to the M4 between Chippenham and Swindon, down towards Andover, down to the east side of the Southampton estary and all along the coast back to Lyne Regis (excluding the Isle of Wright which comes under part of the Central Southern Section) . Over the last decade or so the section had maintained a paid-up and active membership of between 100 and 150 perople. However, in comparison to our neighbouring section, the Central Southern Section, who had over 400 members in 2001 we are a relatively small section.
The section has a committee of 10 people who through their enthusiasm arrange events and gathering throughout the year, usually at least one every month, spread over the whole year from the winter Christmas Party and indoor pub meets to the mid-summer picnics, gardens and shows.
The sections bulletin newsletter editor is always on the look out for items of interest. You could write a short summary of how you came to buy your current club car or your first Rolls-Royce or Bentley, you might recount an unusual incident (Breakdown, Fire, Crash), give an account of a major rally or trip, offer an insight into the experiences of a major or even minor repair. As you can see, most members have an interesting tail to tell in them somewhere, so your contribution however small will be keenly received by the editor.
This Web Site has existed since August 2001, but we are always attempting to improve the quality and contents of the site. If you have any ideas (or spot a error or broken link), please use the Email option to tell the site's adminisrator.
We are always on the lookout for new event venues, if you come across a suitable location (museum, pub, county house, show, etc.) please put the idea forward.
The main objective of the section is to orchestrate the administration of the section so that it's members can best enjoy the ownership of their Rolls-Royce and Bentley cars. Experience has shown that this is best achieved by encouraging members to meet, exchange information, grow friendships and to offer technical help where ever possible. Don't forget that this section is just a small part of the Rolls-Royce Enthusiasts Club and as a member you can fall upon the huge historical and technical resources that the mother club has.
